Is this programme right for me?

Use these signals to check whether this is the right next step or whether another route would be more useful.

A good fit if

  • Students beginning AS Chemistry or consolidating the first year of Cambridge 9701
  • Students who need physical, inorganic, organic, analytical and practical chemistry taught as one connected system

A short diagnostic can confirm the most suitable starting point before enrolment.

Why this programme exists

AS success depends on moving accurately between equations, particles, graphs, mechanisms, spectra and observations. Chemistry I covers every AS topic rather than a convenient selection, then integrates Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 decisions throughout the ten-week sequence.

Expected change

  • Apply the complete AS physical-chemistry toolkit with precise units, assumptions and significant figures.
  • Explain periodic and Group chemistry through structure, bonding, energetics and redox evidence.
  • Represent and reason through the AS organic families, mechanisms and multi-step synthesis.
  • Interpret mass spectra, infrared spectra and other analytical evidence at AS depth.
  • Carry out Paper 3-style observation, measurement, calculation and evaluation safely and systematically.
  • Build a connected AS knowledge base ready for Paper 1, Paper 2 and progression to A Level content.

Entry check

  • Can use algebra, scientific notation and significant figures
  • Can write chemical formulae and complete basic mole calculations
  • Is preparing for 9701 AS content or needs a structured AS consolidation
  • Can complete a short pre-course diagnostic
How the programme adapts

Diagnose. Understand. Apply. Track.

Each cycle uses new evidence to decide what the student should work on next.

  1. Diagnose

Identify the immediate gap or recurring error.

Example in this programmeCan use algebra, scientific notation and significant figures
  2. Understand

Build the chemical explanation behind the topic.

Example in this programmeFrom a numerical result to a defensible chemical answer
  3. Apply

Use the understanding in IB-style work.

Example in this programmeApply the complete AS physical-chemistry toolkit with precise units, assumptions and significant figures.
  4. Track

Record progress and define the next priority.

Example in this programmeSubmitted work is normally returned within three working days.

A concrete teaching example

Incomplete response

From a numerical result to a defensible chemical answer

The enthalpy change is −85.

Developed response or feedback

Define the system and sign, show the stoichiometric pathway, retain units and sensible precision, then interpret what the negative value means for energy transfer.

Reasoning chain: model → calculation → units and sign → chemical interpretation

Course plan

  7. Week 7 · Halogenoalkanes, hydroxy compounds and reaction mechanisms
  8. Week 8 · Carbonyls, carboxylic acids, derivatives, nitrogen compounds and polymerisation
  9. Week 9 · Organic synthesis and analytical evidence, including spectra
  10. Week 10 · Paper 3 practical discipline plus integrated Paper 1 and Paper 2 strategy

Practice, feedback and parent visibility

Submitted work is normally returned within three working days. Feedback marks the point at which the reasoning broke down and turns recurring errors into later practice.

The student receives

  • Focused assignments between live lessons
  • Human feedback linked to the first broken reasoning step
  • A clear next practice priority in the learning space

A parent can see

  • Attendance and completion patterns
  • Recurring error areas and current priorities
  • A concise progress summary at agreed checkpoints

Workload and attendance

Allow about 4 hours each week beyond the 4.5 live contact hours for calculations, mechanisms, practical processing and corrections.

When an enrolled student gives notice that they will miss a class, a private catch-up video is offered with the materials and catch-up priority. This is either the lesson recording where consent and format allow, or a tutor-recorded recap. A missed group lesson is not automatically replaced one-to-one.
