Complete reasoning
- Ethanoic acid is a weak acid, so it dissociates only partially in water.
- CH3COOH + H2O ⇌ H3O+ + CH3COO−
- Let x be the equilibrium hydronium-ion concentration. The same concentration of ethanoate ions forms, while the ethanoic acid concentration becomes c0 − x.
- Ka = [H3O+] · [CH3COO−][CH3COOH] = x2c0 − x
- Calculate the pH from [H3O+] = x. Because dissociation is only partial, x < c0; the acid cannot be treated as if it dissociated completely.
