IB Chemistry SL or HL: which choice keeps your university options open?

A university-led guide to choosing IB Chemistry SL or HL: requirements, academic readiness, limited HL places and the workload of the complete Diploma.

Students are often asked to choose SL and HL subjects before they know exactly what they want to study at university.

That is normal. You do not need a final career plan at 15 or 16. But you do need enough evidence to avoid accidentally closing a route that genuinely matters to you.

The aim is not to build the most difficult-looking Diploma. It is to build the right Diploma.

Chemistry HL deserves serious consideration when

  • a realistic university route requires it;
  • Chemistry is central to a degree the student is seriously considering;
  • the student has - or can build - the necessary foundation; and
  • the complete HL combination remains manageable.

Chemistry SL may be the more strategic choice when

  • likely university courses do not require advanced Chemistry;
  • another subject has greater importance at HL;
  • Chemistry HL would make the whole Diploma unnecessarily heavy; or
  • the student's academic goals can be met fully with SL.

Research should come first when

  • the student has not identified any likely degree areas;
  • the family has not checked official admissions pages;
  • Chemistry is difficult, but nobody has diagnosed why; or
  • the proposed combination contains several demanding HL subjects.

The decision in one minute

No diagram can replace university-specific research, but the sequence below shows the right order of questions. Notice that "Is the student capable of HL?" is not the first question.

The first question is whether Chemistry HL protects a university option that genuinely matters.

Start with university requirements, not the prestige of HL

Families often begin with a personal question:

"Is the student good enough for Chemistry HL?"

That question matters, but it comes second. Begin with something more concrete:

Could any university course the student is seriously considering require Chemistry at Higher Level?

If the answer might be yes, check now. Use the official admissions page for the exact university and course - not an old forum post, a general "best subjects for medicine" article or a requirement remembered by a former student.

Two courses with almost identical names can set different IB prerequisites. Requirements can also change between admission cycles. Check the intended intake, not merely the current course title.

It is also essential to separate three different statements:

  1. Chemistry HL is formally required for admission.
  2. Chemistry HL is academically useful, although not required.
  3. Chemistry HL adds little strategic value for the student's likely direction.

These statements are not interchangeable. A subject can be extremely useful without being compulsory. Conversely, a course may formally require a subject even when a student believes another combination would prepare them equally well.

The degree name alone does not give you the answer

Medicine is a clear example of why university-specific research matters.

For 2027 entry, Imperial College London's Medicine MBBS/BSc lists a minimum IB total of 38, including 6 in Biology HL and 6 in Chemistry HL. Here, Chemistry HL is a formal subject requirement.

Monash University's direct-entry Medicine requirements for international applicants are different. They list an IB total of 39 and accept either 5 in Chemistry SL or 4 in Chemistry HL. Here, SL can satisfy the Chemistry prerequisite.

These examples do not show that one medical school is easier than another, nor that Chemistry SL is generally sufficient for Medicine. They show something more important:

A family cannot infer the Chemistry requirement from the degree name alone.

Imperial Medicine requires Chemistry HL, while Monash direct-entry Medicine accepts a specified grade in either Chemistry SL or HL.

Chemistry SL and HL at a glance

Both Chemistry SL and Chemistry HL are serious IB science courses. SL should not be presented as "easy Chemistry", and HL should not be treated as a badge that automatically strengthens every application.

According to the IB Diploma Programme curriculum, SL subjects have 150 recommended teaching hours, while HL subjects have 240. HL and SL use the same 1-7 grade scale, but HL expects a greater body of knowledge, understanding and skills.

What different university directions may mean for Chemistry

The guidance below is a starting point for research, not a set of universal admissions rules.

Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science

Check every target institution. Some programmes require Chemistry HL, some specify Chemistry alongside another science, and others accept different levels or subject combinations. If one of these fields is a serious possibility, Chemistry HL often deserves careful consideration - but "often worth considering" is not the same as "always compulsory".

Chemistry and medicinal chemistry

For a degree centred on Chemistry itself, HL is usually the most natural preparation and may be formally required. University Chemistry moves quickly into quantitative and molecular reasoning: physical and organic chemistry, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, laboratory work and mathematical treatment of chemical systems.

HL will not make the first year of university easy. It can provide more experience with the depth of reasoning the degree is likely to demand. For example, Oxford's Chemistry admissions requirements require Chemistry at Higher Level and publish detailed IB score combinations. That is an illustration, not a rule for every Chemistry degree.

Pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences

These degrees commonly use substantial Chemistry, including organic, medicinal, analytical and physical chemistry, as well as biochemistry. Chemistry HL may therefore be academically valuable even where it is not a formal prerequisite. Research both the required level and the preparation that will help the student thrive.

Biochemistry and molecular biosciences

Students sometimes assume that Biology must automatically be the most important science for any degree containing the word "bio". That can be misleading. Molecular structure, intermolecular forces, energetics, equilibrium, acid-base behaviour and reaction mechanisms are central to these fields. Compare actual course requirements before choosing between Biology HL and Chemistry HL - or deciding whether both are worthwhile.

Engineering

"Engineering" is too broad to produce one Chemistry recommendation.

  • Chemical engineering: Chemistry is clearly relevant, but Mathematics and Physics may be equally or more important in admissions.
  • Materials or biomedical engineering: Chemistry can be valuable, but requirements differ considerably between institutions.
  • Mechanical, electrical or civil engineering: Mathematics and Physics are often more strategically important than Chemistry HL.

Before selecting Chemistry HL simply because engineering is a scientific field, identify the likely branch.

Other science and non-science degrees

For another science degree, check whether Chemistry is required, recommended or simply useful. For a non-science direction, Chemistry HL can still be an excellent choice if it is one of the student's strongest and most enjoyable subjects. There is little reason to select it purely because HL appears more impressive. A strong Diploma with the right prerequisites is more useful than an unnecessarily difficult Diploma that lowers performance across several subjects.

Every HL choice uses a limited place

An IB student normally plans a limited number of Higher Level subjects. Giving one place to Chemistry may mean another subject remains at SL.

Suppose a student is considering Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics AA and Physics for three HL positions. The important question is not simply:

"Could I do well in Chemistry HL?"

It is:

"If Chemistry is HL, which subject will not be - and does that matter more for my intended degree?"

A future medicinal chemist and a future economist should not make the same choice merely because both are strong Chemistry students. The right selection depends on what each HL subject protects or enables.

Is the student ready for Chemistry HL?

Readiness should not be reduced to one school grade. A student may have a high grade because recent tests were familiar; another may have a slightly lower grade but demonstrate stronger reasoning, respond quickly to feedback and improve consistently. The underlying foundation is more informative than one result.

Encouraging signs include the ability to:

  • balance chemical equations and understand what the coefficients represent;
  • move between mass, moles and concentration using a clear method;
  • explain a trend rather than only memorising it;
  • rearrange straightforward equations and use basic algebra;
  • interpret graphs and tables without losing track of the variables;
  • identify why an answer was wrong after receiving feedback;
  • practise consistently rather than only before a test; and
  • seek help before a small gap becomes a large one.

None of these needs to be perfect before the course begins. The question is whether the student has a workable foundation and the habits required to strengthen it.

If Chemistry is difficult now, diagnose the difficulty before changing level

"Chemistry is difficult" is not yet a diagnosis. The underlying issue might be:

  • missing prior knowledge;
  • the mole concept or stoichiometry;
  • algebra;
  • scientific English;
  • insufficient practice or ineffective revision;
  • imprecise written explanations;
  • difficulty interpreting data;
  • excessive workload from other subjects; or
  • low confidence after previous setbacks.

Each problem needs a different response. A student who understands the Chemistry but writes imprecisely needs different support from a student who cannot yet use the mole concept.

A temporary gap is not necessarily a reason to abandon HL - particularly when HL protects an important university route. But choosing HL without an honest plan to repair the gap is equally unhelpful.

The sensible sequence is:

  1. Identify whether HL matters for the student's future options.
  2. Diagnose the actual academic difficulty.
  3. Decide whether the gap can realistically be addressed.
  4. Review the workload of the complete subject combination.

The question is not whether the student can survive one difficult subject

A student may be capable of Chemistry HL, Mathematics AA HL and Physics HL individually. That does not automatically mean the combined programme is sensible for that student.

The IB Diploma also includes five other subjects, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, CAS, internal assessments, school deadlines, university research and applications, and sleep, health and life outside school.

The incomplete question

"Could I pass Chemistry HL?"

The better question

"Can I study Chemistry HL properly while also doing the rest of my Diploma properly?"

A sustainable workload is not evidence of low ambition. It is often the condition that allows a student to do difficult work well.

How parents can make the conversation more useful

Parents do not need to decide the subject for the student. Their most useful role is to help separate evidence from assumptions and temporary difficulty from long-term fit.

These questions move the discussion away from labels such as "strong student" or "weak student". They lead towards a decision based on goals, evidence and an honest assessment of the complete programme.

A 20-minute exercise for parents and students

If the student is unsure about a future degree, the family does not need to research fifty universities. A small but realistic sample is enough to reveal useful patterns.

Step 1: Choose three possible degree families

Choose directions the student could genuinely imagine, not options included only because they sound prestigious. Examples might include medicine or health sciences; chemistry, biochemistry or pharmacy; engineering; another science; or a non-science field.

Step 2: Select two or three universities for each

Include realistic countries, budgets and academic levels. A list made entirely of extreme reach choices will not provide a balanced basis for subject planning.

Step 3: Open the official page for the exact course

Record the Chemistry level and grade, other required or preferred HL subjects, the overall IB score, required HL score combination, any additional tests or conditions, and the date the page was checked.

Step 4: Look for repeated patterns

Does Chemistry HL appear repeatedly? Does Mathematics AA HL matter more often? Are Biology and Chemistry both required for the routes that interest the student? Would Chemistry SL keep most realistic options open?

The purpose is not to predict the student's entire life at age 15 or 16. It is to avoid accidentally closing a direction that already matters.

Frequently asked questions

Does Chemistry SL look weak to universities?

Not automatically. Universities are principally concerned with whether applicants meet the subject and score requirements for the chosen course. An appropriate SL choice can be more sensible than an unnecessary HL that reduces performance elsewhere.

Do all medical schools require Chemistry HL?

No. Some require Chemistry HL, while others accept Chemistry SL or different science combinations. Check each university and course individually for the intended intake.

Should every strong Chemistry student choose HL?

No. Strength and enjoyment are good reasons to consider HL, but they are not the only factors. University direction, competing HL priorities and total workload matter too. A strong student can make a strategically poor choice if Chemistry HL forces a more important subject to SL or damages performance across the Diploma.

Is Chemistry HL only "more content"?

No. HL involves greater breadth and depth and requires more developed quantitative reasoning, explanation and application. Students need to connect concepts and handle unfamiliar situations with greater confidence, not simply memorise additional facts.

What if the student does not know what to study at university?

That is normal. Begin with three realistic degree families and research several courses in each. The goal is not to fix an entire career immediately; it is to see whether Chemistry HL repeatedly protects a direction the student might genuinely pursue.

Can a student move from SL to HL later?

Possibly, but it depends on the school, timetable, material already covered and how late the change occurs. Ask the school about its deadline and transition policy before relying on a future switch. Moving from HL to SL can also affect a university prerequisite, so it should trigger a fresh review of the shortlist.

Is Chemistry HL more important than Biology HL for Medicine?

There is no universal answer. Some medical programmes specify both, some prioritise particular combinations and others accept Chemistry at SL. Use the official requirements of realistic target programmes rather than a general rule.

How often should university requirements be rechecked?

Check before finalising subjects, again when building the serious university shortlist, and once more before applying. Use requirements for the intended entry year where available.

Five checks before the decision becomes final

Before committing to SL or HL, confirm that:

  • the family has researched several realistic university courses;
  • the information comes from official admissions pages;
  • the student understands which other subjects may need to be HL;
  • the student's actual Chemistry strengths and gaps have been identified; and
  • the workload of the complete Diploma has been considered.

The objective is not to create the most difficult-looking Diploma. It is to build the right Diploma for this student. A good decision should still look sensible eighteen months later, even if the student's plans continue to develop.

How I would approach the choice as an IB Chemistry tutor

I would not automatically recommend HL to every strong student. I would recommend serious consideration of HL when:

  • it keeps open a realistic and meaningful university direction;
  • the student has - or can build - the necessary foundation;
  • the complete Diploma remains manageable; and
  • the student is prepared to practise consistently.

I would recommend serious consideration of SL when:

  • Chemistry HL adds little value for the likely university routes;
  • another subject is more important at HL;
  • the combined workload becomes unnecessarily heavy; or
  • the student can meet the intended academic goals fully with SL.

The purpose is not to maximise difficulty. It is to make a decision based on evidence rather than prestige, anxiety or temporary frustration.
