I Understand IB Chemistry but Still Lose Marks — Six Error Types

Separate knowledge, method, interpretation, wording, timing and checking errors before choosing the next practice task.

A lesson can feel completely clear, yet marks still disappear in an examination question. That does not always mean more content study is needed. First establish where the answer departed from sound reasoning.

A lost mark is neither a character flaw nor proof that you “cannot do chemistry”. It becomes useful feedback when you can name the first failed step and use a new question to test whether you have identified the real cause.

Six types of mark loss

Two causes can occur together. If you misread the instruction and then flawlessly perform a calculation that was not required, interpretation is the first repair—not calculation speed. The diagnosis should therefore refer to the first divergence.

Replace ‘carelessness’ with the first specific failure, then choose the matching repair.

Replace “I understood it; I was just careless” with an observable statement: “I missed that the question required comparison”, “I did not convert the volume to dm³”, or “I described the graph but cited no numerical evidence”. Each statement can generate a specific practice task.

One question, three different diagnoses

Weak answer: “Ethanol forms stronger bonds, so more energy is needed to boil it.”

Improved answer: “Both substances have London dispersion forces, but ethanol molecules can also form hydrogen bonds with one another because they contain an O–H group. Methoxymethane has no hydrogen bonded to oxygen, so its molecules do not form the same hydrogen-bonding network with one another in the pure liquid. The overall intermolecular attractions are therefore stronger in ethanol, more energy is needed to separate its molecules, and its boiling point is higher.”

One weak answer can conceal three different problems. Failure to recognise hydrogen bonding is a knowledge gap. Recognition without comparing both substances is incomplete communication. Calling intermolecular attractions “bonds” without distinction is conceptual imprecision.

Do not copy the improved response during the retry. Cover it and answer a different comparison. That reveals whether you understand the reasoning rather than merely recognising the sentence.

A twenty-minute script review

Choose five lost marks from one recent task. You do not need five whole questions; choose five places where the correction reveals what was absent.

  1. Assign one of the six error types.
  2. Circle the first wrong or missing step.
  3. Write one sentence explaining why the original response could not earn the mark.
  4. Set one short repair task.
  5. Give the independent retry a date.

A useful repair is small and measurable. “Revise equilibrium” is too broad. “Write the Kc expression for three reactions and justify every exponent from the stoichiometric coefficient” can be checked. Instead of “do more Paper 1B”, choose one graph and require a numerical comparison plus one limit on the conclusion.

If four of the five marks fall into one category, you have the priority for the week. If every mark differs, inspect another task: one script may not contain a reliable pattern.

An answer corrected immediately is not yet secure knowledge. The markscheme or explanation may only be holding the reasoning together temporarily. A delayed retry in a changed context is the test.

The delayed retry tests whether the correction is durable.

On day 1, identify the first failure. On day 2, relearn only the missing relationship and complete two targeted questions. On day 4, mix the skill among other topics so it is not dependent on a familiar page. On day 7, retry without notes or a solution.

If the same error returns, do not automatically increase the number of questions. Check whether the diagnosis was accurate, whether day-two practice became independent and whether the new task genuinely tested the same skill. The full sequence sits inside the IB Chemistry exam-preparation system.

What should a parent look for?

Look beyond hours completed. Can the student name the reason a mark was lost, and can they repair the same cause independently a week later? “Where was the first step that diverged?” is more useful than “Why were you not more careful?”

Progress can appear before the score changes. The student names the blockage more precisely, starts with fewer prompts and transfers the repaired method to a new topic. The Paper 1B data-analysis guide shows what this looks like for evidence questions.

When is teacher support useful?

Ask for help when the same error remains after several targeted repairs, you cannot locate the first failed step, or performance varies sharply across tasks of similar difficulty. An external review can separate retrieval, method selection, written communication and time pressure.

The purpose is not to promise an error-free paper. It is to make every lost mark generate a more precise next task and to collect independent evidence one week later that the repair works.
