The real choice is not simply “AS or A Level”
When a parent asks, “Should my child do AS or A Level?”, three decisions are hidden inside the question:

The distinction matters because qualification, timing, workload and carry-forward questions change. It is not a prestige ladder. AS may be the complete and appropriate intended qualification; both full A Level routes produce the same level of qualification through different timing.

Four clarifications prevent common errors. The two full A Level routes lead to the same qualification level. AS-only and staged students initially take the same papers but have different destinations. Paper 4 draws on the AS foundation as well as additional content. Ask what the qualification needs to do
Start from the external purpose, not perceived prestige. Ask whether the school programme leads to AS or the full A Level, whether Chemistry is required or recommended for the likely next step, and what exact qualification and grade the relevant institution currently publishes. If the student is exploring, identify the date by which the decision must become firm.

Look for reliable setup, units, significant figures and multi-step calculations. Repeated restarts, unexplained calculator values and reliance on a memorised template suggest that chemistry, algebra, conversion or time pressure needs investigation.
Organic and representational fluency
The student should move between names, formulae, mechanisms, reagents, conditions and spectra. Remembering reaction pairs without planning a route suggests a collection of flashcards rather than a connected network.
Experimental reasoning
Look for sensible data, a distinction between observation and inference, appropriate graphs and improvements tied to limitations. Generic phrases such as “avoid human error” do not establish practical reasoning. Ask what the student has actually done in the laboratory.
Independence and study behaviour
The student should complete planned work, review errors and explain what help is needed. High performance with constant prompting is different from independent readiness across a heavy subject load.

A student does not need perfection in all five domains. The useful question is which weaknesses are repairable within the available time, and which make the proposed timetable fragile.
A mock result is evidence, not a verdict
Use more than one attempt where possible. Examine each paper rather than only the overall percentage. Distinguish unfinished questions from attempted but incorrect work. Confirm that the task matched the current syllabus and was completed under known conditions, then classify the cause and look for a trend.
Two students can both score 62%. Student A leaves 15 marks blank but is accurate elsewhere; Student B finishes but repeatedly uses the wrong equilibrium expression. Their next steps should not be identical.

The local K/S/C/D/T labels make review repeatable. They do not replace chemical topic analysis or Cambridge marking guidance. A score becomes more useful when the family can say which causes recur, whether they change under time, and whether a correction survives a later mixed question.
The calendar matters as much as the intention
Map teaching weeks, school mocks, official examinations, other heavy subjects, independent-study capacity, scheduled laboratories and interruptions such as travel, illness or a school change. Include correction and revisit time, not only first attempts.

There is no honest universal number of weekly hours. One focused hour repairing a prerequisite can be worth more than several hours of unfocused question accumulation. If a proposed route works only when every remaining week is perfect, add a buffer or reconsider the timetable.
Practical preparation cannot be added at the last minute
Paper 3 is hands-on and belongs to the AS component set. Paper 5 is written planning, analysis and evaluation in the full A Level set. The student needs supervised laboratory opportunities through the school or approved centre. Online work can strengthen experimental reasoning and data handling, not replace direct manipulation of apparatus.

Is taking all five papers together better than a staged route?
